Dr. Sylvia Dasi is a geneticist with a deep-rooted passion for public health and human development. Her interest in genetics began at the University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES), where she majored in Biology and was selected for the prestigious Minority Access to Research Careers Scholar Program, established by the National Institutes of Health. Through this program, she received advanced training from institutions such as the Jackson Laboratory, the University of Maryland Biotechnology Institute, and the National Institutes of Health (NHGRI and NIA), focusing on the genetic causes of human diseases. Her early exposure to genetics sparked a lifelong dedication to understanding human susceptibility to diseases and advancing control and prevention strategies. Graduating in 2008 with a Bachelor of Science degree, Dr. Dasi was recognized as the Most Outstanding Student in the Department of Agriculture and Natural Sciences. She then pursued her doctoral studies at Howard University, focusing on identifying DNA changes that might indicate breast cancer progression in women of African descent. She earned her Ph.D. in Human Genetics in 2014, along with a certificate in International Studies. Dr. Dasi extended her expertise beyond academia into public and global health, particularly in breast cancer awareness within the African immigrant communities in the Washington, D.C. metropolitan area. She collaborated with the African Women’s Cancer Awareness Association (AWCAA) to coordinate medical missions to Cameroon, Nigeria, and Tanzania, delivering culturally competent health education on breast cancer awareness, prevention, and control in rural African communities. In 2023, she further expanded her expertise by earning a Master of Business Administration (MBA) with a specialization in project management from Walden University. Throughout her career, Dr. Dasi has received numerous accolades for her scholarly contributions, including a Proclamation of Academic Achievement from the Prince George’s County Executive (2008), the Comcast Student Achievement Award (2004), and the State of Maryland Governor’s Volunteer Service Certificate (2013).
